It is the far future, with the story-relevant portion of the galaxy under one empire whose president-turned emperor has become pseudo-immortal using cybernetics. A wandering sword and shield adventurer-hero is recruited by a senator against the emperor, supposedly to restore the republic. However, it turns out the senator has an ulterior motive, as using a technological device he wants to preserve the republic by turning it into groundhog day.
